Quella Creator is a tool designed to optimise data processing and to facilitate design, maintenance and delivery of business reports. In addition, Quella Creator complies with the three most important requirements of a data warehouse and reporting tool:

• Source Independence: The capacity to extract data from any available data source regardless its format. This means seamless communication with the many different relational databases and file formats used throughout an organisation.

 

• Abstraction: The capacity to effectively hide the implementation details of a Business Intelligence Solution by enforcing a clear separation between the business logic and rules of said solution and its physical implementation. This can only be achieved by delivering a meta data centric solution design.

 

• Platform Independence: The capacity to implement the design of a Business Intelligence Solution on different Database Management Systems (DBMS's). In this context, the DBMS acts as the Implementation Engine of the solution.

Quella Creator can connect and extract data from any data source using either OLE Database providers or ODBC-drivers. Through these connections, meta data and data can be transferred to a Data Warehouse File from where Quella Creator can offer full access to all relevant aspects of the imported data sources. AS400, MS SQLServer, MS Access, MS Excel and Text Files are some examples of data sources whose data can easily be extracted and combined using Quella Creator.

Creator has been designed to be a meta data centric application allowing users to work at a high level of abstraction. In this way, the focus is set on business rules and on answering relevant business questions, rather than on the technical implementation of these. Moreover, as the design work is carried out at a meta data level, a physical connection to the involved data sources is not needed until actual data is to be extracted. Users can then enjoy the freedom of working off-line while network and source systems are not over-loaded with additional traffic.

Modelling meta data has also the further advantage of offering high flexibility when creating user-defined tables, defining relationships, adding calculations or re-directing dependencies between objects. This flexibility also includes absorbing modifications made to the table structure and/or access policy of the required data sources. Such changes can rapidly be absorbed by just re-importing the meta data and/or re-defining the accessing data of the data sources in question. Regardless the modifications that need to be incorporated, they can be easily propagated within a solution so that existing objects and business rules may require none or a minimum of updating efforts. This makes the design, re-design and maintenance of a Business Intelligence Solution much easier.

Users do not need to have data warehouse experience nor extensive knowledge in SQL-programming to fully exploit the rich functionality encapsulated in Quella Creator. Through a user-friendly interface, extracting, combining and managing data becomes an easy task. Powerful algorithms also make the data manipulation process more efficient and flexible while build-in reporting capabilities enable users to deliver fully customised Cube or OLAP-reports and List Reports.

A key aspect following the design of a Business Intelligence Solution, is the physical implementation of all the required objects and business rules. This task is automatically carried out by Quella Creator ensuring in this way a smooth and optimal implementation. In addition, human intervention after deployment can be minimised by using the build-in schedule functionality.

In order to add flexibility to the deployment of a Business Intelligence Solution, Quella Creator supports several Implementation Engines capable of hosting the data processing dimension of a solution in the form of a Data Warehouse.
