Quella Creator: Data Extraction Features

Data extraction features cover the selection of and connection to the Data Sources a Business Intelligence Solution is to be based on. To start with, the most important is to decide which type of connection is the adequate to use according to the type of Data Source(s) at hand.

The second question to focus on is to decide which tables and/or views are going to be needed as the base for the reports to be created. Even though it is always possible to come back later and add new objects, it is a recommended practice to clearly define the data needs for the projected solution before beginning any actual work.

The feature list displayed below is not exhaustive and is only intended to give an understanding of the core functionality available to the users of Quella Creator.

Data Sources

Quella Creator Data Sources

Quella Creator is a tool capable of extracting and manipulating data from any data source. A connection to a given data source can be established either natively or through a compatible ODBC-driver.

  • MS SQL Server: This alternative can be utilised to natively connect to any running instance of a MS SQL Server 7.0 or 2000.
  •

  • Microsoft Access Database: Microsoft Access database files can be natively accessed.
  •

  • Other Data Sources: This category of data sources comprises MS Excel files, dBase and Paradox databases. These data sources are natively accessed.
  •

  • Text Files: Text files are the simplest possible way of storing data, are extremely easy to create and are commonly used to share data between incompatible systems. Text files are natively accessed.
  •

  • ODBC Data Source: ODBC stands for Open Database Connectivity and is a data access application programming interface (API) that supports access to any data source for which an ODBC-driver is available. Since all commercial databases are normally distributed with their own ODBC-drivers, the ODBC-connection is considered the "de facto" universal database connectivity.

Meta Data Extraction

Quella Creator Meta Data Extraction

After a connection to one or several data sources has been established, a collection of objects (tables and views) is made available from each of the selected data sources. The available tables and views can be freely included into a Business Intelligence Solution regardless the data source they may come from.

Table Options

Quella Creator Table Options

These options define how a table is treated as part of a Business Intelligence Solution and they can be understood as the macro logic behind the behaviour of any physical table and related actual data. Besides Filters and Aggregations, Table Options represent the most important set of rules governing the manner in which actual data to be stored in any given table is to be manipulated.

Table options can be divided into two distinctive groups:

  • Extraction Options: It refers to the extraction technique to apply when data is extracted. This technique is valid regardless whether the data is located within the Business Intelligence Solution or outside in the Data Sources.
  •

  • Processing Options: It defines how the extracted data is to be treated at the moment of storing it into a table within the Business Intelligence Solution.

Note that Extraction and Processing Options are independent from each other and do not impose any restrictions in terms of possible combinations of parameters.
